"Pour Me Another" by Doug Folkins

How do you describe Doug Folkins? A little bit of Great Big Sea mixed in with a little bit of Blue Rodeo. He's energetic, playful, fun...and that's only the beginning. Folkins can go from traditional Maritime reels, to driving sing along tunes, to songs with emoiton and poise. He's simply...amazing.

Review: "Symphony From The Ghost Ship" by Angus Mohr

Artist: Angus Mohr
Album: Symphony From The Ghost Ship
Year produced: 2008

Highland rock at its best--seriously. I really love this CD and remembered this musical sound right away from listening to the last one I reviewed, "The Heroic Adventures Of Angus Mohr". Fine pipes and blasting energy, this is an album of full sound, meant to be played loud and enjoyed immensely. It makes you want to dance around furiously. That can't be said of too many CDs really, so it is something to savor.

A tossed salad of punk, Celtic and rock influences, the music doesn't sit neatly in one genre, but picks and chooses what it likes from each. Add to that the Highland backbone and you have a recipe for flavorful music that won't allow you to walk away without experiencing it. It almost demands that of you. And if you think I'm being melodramatic--try it out yourself. You'll see what I'm saying.

Crank the volume, put on "Paddy's Leather Breeches" and see what this is all about. You'll find a few covers here, among them nods to both AC/DC and Dylan; but you'll also hear some originals. A nice mix that keeps things going. Not all of it is "hardcore," but it's all good.

Review: "The Parish Platform" by Rattle The Boards

Artist: Rattle The Boards
Album: The Parish Platform
Year produced: 2008

Sometimes I'll hear an Irish traditional band and get pulled back to the days when my Dad and his brothers would all sing together and have a grand 'ol time "getting their Irish on". This CD has such a sound. True Irish flavor with an "old days" touch. It's all here... jigs, reel, hornpipe and a soft song or two. The album is a great pick if you want a little of everything Ireland.

There is no modern flash here. You'll get the real deal, and it sounds like it is played with heart and soul. I have to say I almost wished for more tracks. I was enjoying the sweet simplicity of this CD. That said, I must point out that the musicians here are no novices, just that they are content to play to their best and share their love of the music with those who listen to them. The band has been together since 1992, and there is no doubt they know their stuff.

I can't emphasize enough that this CD sounds like the best guys from the neighborhood got together and cut an album. There is just that down-home Irish flavor to it. I'll play this one again and again.

Review: "Wild Horses" by Celtic Sands

Artist: Celtic Sands
Album: Wild Horses
Year produced: 2008

Celtic music fans will delight in this album which features unbridled (couldn't help it) enthusiasm and charm. There are some folk music underpinnings and a definite rock vibe here and there, but the Celtic sound is ever present as well. Sometimes you just want to put a CD on that you can play all the way through, and this one would qualify. There is plenty here to enjoy and appreciate.

Each track was delivered with style, whether it had a gentle harp or a rousing cacophony of instruments competing for attention. Sometimes the instruments even played "tag" with the melodies--one at a time--making the entire track into an interesting game for the ear to follow.

Improvisation is the centerpiece of this effort, and only those who are skilled should attempt it. That said, it seems surprisingly scripted here it is done so very well. The ebb and flow of the music is so natural that the loose arrangements don't even seem needed for structure. There was a real energy among these musicians that was almost palpable, and not in a showy way. You could just tell they share a common focus on the song at hand.

Catherine L. Tully's Top Ten Celtic CDs of 2008

Well, 2008 was a great year for Celtic music, and I'd like to take the opportunity now to share some of my favorites with you here. It was hard to choose just ten! Just so you know........they are in no particular order...

1. "For Love And Laughter" by Solas
Passionate music by skilled musicians who have been around on the Celtic scene for quite some time. Each new album finds the band pushing themselves a little harder, and this is no exception.

2. "Whiskers In The Jar" by Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats
Everyone can use a good laugh, and Marc Gunn provides that--as well as good music on this energetic and amusing CD about cats. Yes, you heard right--the album features Irish and Scottish songs that have been "adjusted" to be about cats!

3. "Far From Home" by Pitch The Peat
This band plays traditional Irish music and does it simply, without fanfare or flourish. Still, the sheer ease of the sound captured me and I really enjoyed their work.

4. "The Drunken Priest And The Ghostly Hymns Of Autumn" by Damanta
Is it Celtic? Is it alt/rock? Is it good? Why yes, it 'tis! Great vocals, great music and an album that is full of surprises. Fans of Celtic rock should really enjoy this CD.

5. "Sham Rock" by Beatnik Turtle
Irish pub songs with a rock vibe. This band went all out on this CD and the music was really terrific.

6. "A Thousand Curses Upon Love" by Jennifer Licko Shelton
Scottish and Irish influences reign on this CD and Jennifer Licko Shelton's voice is a pleasure to listen to.

7. "What's The Rumpus?" by Gaelic Storm
Acoustic sound and a party of an album. African drums, Irish pipes and fiddle all combine for a wild ride. If you can't get the idea from the title of the final track, " The Night I Punched Russell Crowe," I don't know what to tell you. Check this out and dare to be different.

8. "Hollow Of Morning" by Gemma Hayes
Beautiful melodies combined with stellar songwriting make this CD gorgeous. A well-crafted album.

9. "The Very Best Of Clannad" by Clannad
While "best of" albums can be a bit bland, this one stands out from the crowd. You can hear faves such as 'In A Lifetime' (with Bono), and 'I Will Find You' here--and the band doesn't skimp either. You get 17 tracks of their best.

10. "The High Kings" by The High Kings
Traditional music at its best, this CD is full of great harmonies and great sounds. It was one that really stayed with me long after I heard it the first time. The minute I finished the album, I marked it as one of the best for 2008 and it remained on my list all year. Outstanding.
