"Bonny Portmore" by The Rogues
Houston's incredible Pipes and Drums band, The Rogues have released the first track from their brand new album, "V.O". Let me start, by saying this band is phenomenal. Their name is spreading like rapidfire among anyone who loves the bagpipes, but this album is sure to start a new trend of creating bagpipe- lovers among those who never liked bagpipes before. Case in point is "Bonny Portmore". This song belongs on a soundtrack to some hit movie. And not just a Celtic movie. ANY movie. It's beautifully composed with soft horns playing a lead before the bagpipes take over this much-loved song and soon-to-be classic. "Scots Wha' Ha'e" by The Real McKenzies
The Real McKenzies are a celtic punk rock band donning traditional (and sometimes not so traditional) highland garb of kilts and sporrans. The band is made up of 6 raucious lads who claim to be entirely Scottish while on stage, if at no other time. Formed in the mid nineties for reasons that defy explanation, The RM's have played over 3,000 gigs. Constant rigorous touring & an innate sense of always being in the right place at the wrong time has led to many memorable war stories, many injuries, many whiskies, many shows with some of the greatest bands around, and too much more fun & fury to detail! The RM's have embraced the new millenium with renewed vim & vigor. You can find the 21st century Celtic bards gregariously preparing for their next release with new skins on drums, new strings on guitars, sharpening their wits & swords readying themselves for a new campaign of fun & Celtic storm! And now for something completely different. If Scotland had punk rockers back during the Highland Clearnances, I don't think there would have been any clearances. The Real McKenzies play Scottish punk. And here, they take on one of Robert Burns poem, and give it their own non-traditional, highly raucous flare. If you're ready to rebel, crank up the music! "The Brewer Laddie" by Changeling (Mad Celts)
Formed in 1993, Changeling has often been described as a powerful ten piece Celtic dance band that somehow gets that huge sound with just two people. Changeling offers modern interpretations of traditional songs in a unique, acoustic style. The members of Changeling have also played in the bands Innisheer and The Gabriel Hounds. Oh, this is not the same Changeling as the techno band on the site. This one has been around longer, but got to MP3.Com too late, so there you go. A rip-roarin' traditional song about a small time girl who leaves an adoring brewer for a man from the city. Fiery fiddle-playing and some delicious diddling gives this song an authentic and suspenseful sound and story. "Real Love" by Dan Toher & Celtic Salsa Express
What the? You read it correctly. Celtic sasla. Dan Toher is the leader of a 9-piece spectacular Festival Band featuring an intense 4 piece rhythm section supplemented with horns guitars, violin & soaring diva & backing female vocal section. In studio & on the road the band is supplemented with celebrity talent from Riverdance, The Corr's, Ray Charles band,& where possible talent from all parts of the world. This song truly pushes the limits of Celtic music. Irishman Dan Toher has a song that combines New York Latin R&B with Riverdance. Actually, the drummer Robbie Casserley recorded with The Celtic Salsa Express before moving on to Riverdance. Add on top of this the diva vocals of Angie Workman who sings regularly with Ray Charles and you've got a very jazzy tune. No, don't go in listening for something traditional. If Dan Toher & The Celtic Salsa Express were as much rebels as Black 47, I think they would reiterate Larry Kirwan's saying regarding whether they were Celtic. "I'm Irish. I'm playing music, so shut up and listen." Hometown: Dublin, Ireland Website: Dan Toher & Celtic Salsa ExpressDownload MP3: MP3 sound clips Buy CD: see website
