The music of Ockham's Razor has been described as "kind of a Gaelic-Celtic flavor with an interesting pop sensibility." In fact, Ockham's Razor is known to mix traditional Celtic music with their own style, bringing a fresh sound to old sons. Based out of Seattle, this quartet combines acoustic guitar, fiddle and tin whistles, backing it up with the pulse of a djembe to give each song a youthful sound in hopes of introducing a new gernation to the music of their heritage. They definitely keep the listener's toes tapping and yearning for more of their sound.

"Blue Car" by An Triur

An Triur, Irish for "Three People," is described as Irish traditional music with a shot of pop. The name of the band brings into focus this amazing trio of musicians and songwriters. John Maze, one of the leading American proponents of the uilleann pipes, has studied, performed, and taught the instrument across the United States. Not only did he found one of the largest sets of workshops and concerts with focus falling on Irish triadional music, but he has alos performed solo an with ensambles on a multitude of instruments. Likewise, Larre Reeves has perfected his style of playing thanks to numerous visits to County Clare. He supplies the sound of the flute, whistle, concertina, mandolin, and bodhran. Still, since the age of 11, Mick Richmond has been singing and playing guitar, and up until lately he had fancided himself a rock musician. But this singer/songwriter uses that history to feed a moden pop approach into the traditional Irish tunes.

With a new CD just released, entitled "Three People," this band shares not only it's fresh style on traditional songs, but gives listeners a taste of some of their original work too. The combinaiton of their musical talents offers up a fun combination of songs that will leave the listener longing for more.

"HighStrung Set" by Darcy Nair

Darcy Nair has been performing as a professional soloist and with folk music groups since 1990. Since then, her career has brought about experience with traditional and modern Celtic music to renaissance madrigals, English sea shanties and pub songs, bluegrass, and modern songwriting. In fact, she has produced seven recordings and traveled extensively throughout the United States to perform.

Born to perform, Darcy had been singing since childhood. It was only when she was in her 20's that she began playing her musical instruments. Now, she performs on hammered dulcimer, Irish bouzouki, English concertina, pennywhistle, bodhran and bones.

Her new CD, HighStrung, was just released this year, and is a blend of traditional tunes and her own songwriting. Instead of simply covering a song, Darcy adds her own touch to each one and really makes it her own.

"Out With the Rubbish" by Cynthia Bennett

Cynthia grew up thinking that music was just something that everyone did. That it was a part of them. While this wasn't exactly true, the sounds and sights that she saw in her grandmother's ceili kitchen lingered and music remained an important influence in her life. Yet, while music played an important role, it wasn't until she was in two careers, a mother and a nurse, that she began to perform professionally.

Having since performed in Ireland, Canada and the United States, Cynthia recently released her first CD, Cauldron of Life. Her singing career began with singing traditional tunes and ballads, but since then she has added her own original compositions. These songs often include tales from Celtic mythology, Irish history, and anecdotes of everyday life, frequently with a humorous twist. Avoiding conventional whining about lost love, she prefers the stories of strong, independent, adventurous women.

Having since moved to Texas, Cynthia met up joined with guitarist La Donna Goetz, whose magical accompaniments wrap themselves perfectly around Cynthia's beautiful alto voice. The combination is unforgettable and the music delightful.

"High Strung" by Darcy Nair

by Catherine L. Tully

Artist: Darcy Nai
Album: "High Strung"
Year produced: 2006

The "folk" sound in the voice of a true folk singer seems to come from a deep, and sometimes long, love of music. Darcy Nair apparently has both. Learning how to harmonize at a young age, and able to make them up as she goes (dubbed "woodshedding"), Nair is an interesting combination of singer and musician. No stranger to playing, you'll hear the hammered dulcimer in her hands, among other instruments. She is also able to play the Irish bouzouki, English concertina, bodhran and bones.

Not all tracks are traditional here--Nair adds her own touch and isn't afraid to stray a bit from the usual fare. Songs like, "Now I Know" and "Half Moon Bay" hold up well with the style of Nair's voice--very introspective and even a bit dreamy at moments. Contrasting nicely are some lovely instrumental tracks, where you can just listen and enjoy the music. All in all, there is really a good combination of tracks here.

Performing professionally since 1990, Nair has a confidence that shows through in her voice. Fans of the dulcimer will undoubtedly love this CD. The instrument always lends such a unique sound to any arrangement that it can't help but stand out--it isn't the type of thing that blends into the background easily. Even when it is played softly, it sets the tone for any song it is in. Fans of Celtic and/or folk alike should like this CD.
