"Flenderson's Revenge" by Ryan M. Barnes
Ryan M. Barnes' specialty is Irish/Canadian folk, as well as moody piano. What he does well is mesh the two of them to create his sound. His music is perfectly at home in a storm-covered night, drinking ale and contemplating life's irony while the cat on your lap blanket becomes drenched with tears. It's all about emotions. And no one does it better than Ryan M. Barnes. Hometown: Fresno, California, USA Website: Ryan M. "Dance Around" by Claire Tchaikowski
Claire Tchaikowski was born in Switzerland to three Irish grandparents and one Polish one. She spent serveral months a year in Ireland with her family before moving to London in the late 90s to study music. That was when she began to write songs and realized just how powerful her Celtic heritage was. Her debut album, Those Thousand Seas, was released in 2008 and has been getting rave reviews. There's good reason too. Her sound is unique and polished. Give her a listen...and you'll be hooked too. "Ireland's Child" by Holly Mathias
Holly Mathias is a singer/guitarist who has been performing for most of her life. She began in coffee houses, playing her traditional (and not-so-traditional) Celtic music. "Rocky Road to Dublin" by aBuck63
aBuck63 is a traditional Irish folk duet consisting of Matt and Heather Murphy, a husband and wife duo. Their sound is built largely on Heather's tin whistle. In fact, their music takes listeners on a journey through the Celtic landscape, as well as introducing the pioneer spirit of their forefathers who actually settled the valley they call home. Influenced by bluegrass and country western artists, their songs often take on a more progressive "pub style" with the pounding tempos, as well as reels, jigs, and haunting harmonies. "Tony" by Heidi Jane
Heidi Jane has been referred to as "Susan Vega and Peter Gabriel set sea on a sea of fiddles." Nothing could be further from the truth for this independent musician living in San Francisco. The violin is her principle instrument and she enjoys creating music that is not solely driven by the typical electric guitar foundation which sets the tone of most rock music. Nor does she take the solo acoustic approach of many folk bands. By placing violin at the forefront, she is creating a sound all her own that is a rich blend of the beautiful string instruments. Her playing is a unique hibrid of fiddle-playing, which infuses lilting Irish accents with African and Latin Rhythms, all melting with the warm classical tone of the violin. Simply put...she is simply amazing! Review: "Sham Rock" by Beatnik Turtle
Artist: Beatnik TurtleThis is a fun album that is easy to recommend. Take your favorite Irish pub songs and add the spin of a group named "Beatnik Turtles" and you can imagine what could happen.... And happen it does! Take these faves and add some truly rocked-out arrangnements and it makes for a really fun ride. This Chicago band has a full horn section and has been playing for 11 years, so you know they can really do their thing. The fun part is discovering what this band has decided to do with songs such as "Finnegan's Wake" and "Mary Mac". Tune in--and be surprised! The best part is that if you like this band, there's plenty more where this came from. They are prolific in terms of recording, having released a song every day in 2007. That's a whole lot of music to choose from. These guys are a true "indie" band and aren't afraid to get in there and mix it up when it comes to trying new things and playing their hearts out. Highly recommended. I'll be keeping my eye on this band...

Review: "The Big Spree" by Breabach
This band's youth shines through in their energetic arrangements and dazzling playing style. The Scottish quartet produces a harmonious sound that is delightful and sprightly. Celtic folk music can range from the simple--to this--the sublime. The complexity of the instrumentation is obvious, but the players deliver it with such ease that it almost seems effortless. This is not done often, and to accomplish it at such a young age is remarkable.
Much of the CD is pure, raw energy, but there are songs delivered with a soft touch as well. "The Rolling Hills" is such a tune. It may come as a bit of a shock that this is the band's debut album; they sound as if they've been playing together for quite some time. This is a direct reflection of each person's individual skill, as they blend and still manage to highlight each of their own talents in the mix. Favorites here include "Chloe's Passion" and "Caber Feidh," but I really have come to appreciate these young players for their skill in the short span of the CD. If you give them a try--I believe you will as well.

Review: "As I Roved Out" by The Langer's Ball
Artist: The Langer's Ball There is something about the charm of the first track here that really sets the tone for the entire album. "Galway Girl" is just such a simple, sweet song that you can't help but enjoy it--and it is presented without fanfare or frills. Just two people, their instruments--and their love of the genre. Michael Sturm plays the guitar, mandolin & vocals and Hannah Rediske handles the piano, accordion and penny whistle. Fans of Irish music will love "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and the title track, "As I Roved Out". There are jigs here as well as polkas--everything has a pep and verve to it--or an even flow if that happens to be what is called for. Time and attention was paid to the arrangements, and although they are not terribly complex, they are well composed. This is a perfect debut album, as it shows the band's skill, yet reflects the full range of their abilities. They play with confidence and ease--a great combination; pure and simple.

Review: "Live At Painted Sky" by Banshee In The Kitchen
Artist: Banshee In The KitchenI gave this band points for a great name before I even heard a thing. "Live At Painted Sky" is Banshee In The Kitchen's fifth album, and if you are looking for a CD that is jam-packed with tracks and good music, this is a good selection. This band is made up of three women and when they gather 'round, good things happen.
Brenda Hunter plays the hammered duclimer, and she is a National Champion, but the other two ladies, Jill Egland and Mary Tulin are her equal on their instruments. There is no "lead" vocalist; they all take turns and sing backup, which makes for nice variety. It is a little unusual to hear an all-female group, and there is a neat vibe to it in terms of the sound it delivers.
There's a smidge of humor here, as well as some live recordings and "chatting" to the audience. It lends a bit of flavor and sets the mood for the music quite well. Makes you feel like you are right there, listening to them live. The ebb and flow of energy here is natural and easy and the arrangements are lovely. You can tell these ladies enjoy what they are doing.

Review: "Pacifica" by Amadan
Artist: Amadan A Celtic/punk mix that is truly different, Amadan delivers an interesting album with "Pacifica". The Celtic influence is clear, but the band can also rock the house with their fresh take on the punk music influence. Track one pops right out at you, trading off between heavy Celtic feel and thumping punk sounds. Energy, energy. The vocals are more industrial or alternative-sounding than raucous punk, but this is good. It is one of the things that lends a different air to the music presented here. Instead of just copying other Celtic/punk bands, these guys make their own way; set their own course--and it makes them stand out from the crowd. In fact, it is almost as if more a traditional rock music makes an appearance here and there as well for a braid of three influences. "Not Your Man" is a particularly rousing track, but the whole CD is a good listen. An atypical effort, this should please those who are fans of Celtic/punk. It is also a good album to suggest for those who may want to dip a toe into the genre without going full boat down the river in this genre should check these guys out too. It's a great introduction that doesn't go too far down the "thrash" path.
