"I Got Laid On James Joyce's Grave" by Black 47
If you're familiar with Black 47's New York attitude with a Celtic instruments, let me start by saying, sadly, they are not on MP3.com. I was surfing the net hoping to meet some new bands, when I came across their site. Admittedly, I didn't know much about them or what to expect. The link said Celtic and that's what I went with. Black 47 plays original confrontational Irish music. As the bio says, when as asked to play an Irish song, the replied, "I'm from Ireland. I wrote the song, that makes it Irish. So shut the fuck up!" The music combines, guitar, sax, drums, trombone, tin whistle and Uilleann pipes. Very unique sound. Next, add the vocals which are sorta David Byrne-ish, but better. He sings with amazing attitude and emotion. The MP3s I listened to that are free for downloading on their website are just incredible. The singer has a new solo project out called "Kilroy was here". The one MP3 they had available, "Molly" was killer, but I decided instead to review their most popular track on their recent CD. Wickedly satirical song in a sort of Irish Ska Funk style. "Na Libh O Ho I" by Rudy Ramsey
Rudy Ramsey sings Celtic songs (mostly Scottish) in English, Scots, and Scottish Gaelic. He also plays a little Celtic fingerstyle guitar. You know there are only a couple artists on MP3.com playing traditional Scottish music. And those in Scottish Gaelic are even rarer. Now add a beautiful, well-recorded male voice, and you come up with Rudy Ramsey. No, he's not a native Scotsman, but he is helping to preserve a wealth of traditional Scottish music. This is the lullaby of Donald Gorm MacDonald of Sleat (on the Isle of Skye, Scotland). It's a wonderfully positive song (there are many rather dark lullabies in GĂ idhlig, but this one is full of hope and good cheer). Thanks Rudy! "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" by Jiggernaut
Neo-celtic groove-a-latious mondo-pop indulgence! Many bands have tried to bind the heart of Celtic music to the soul of rock and roll, but none so successfully as Jiggernaut. A group founded on contradiction, their sound is a rich mixture of old and new, traditional and contemporary. Fueled by white-hot piping, smoking accordion, fiery vocals, and an irresistible groove, they are setting out to redefine Celtic music for the 21st century. Out from Houston, Jiggernaut is a Texas Celtic all-star cast featuring band members of bands like Six Mile Bridge, The Rogues, Two O'Clock Courage, Poor Man's Fortune, The Blarney Borthers and Full Circle. Together they've put together an incredible Celtic Rock group featuring some fantastic music. "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" is the first release on their MP3.com website, and for this song, I say, "Look out Corrs". This is song is great Celtic pop song, with a catchy chorus and thought-provoking lyrics about the wisdom that comes from experience. Get up and dance to Texas Celtics newest Rock sensation Jiggernaut. And keep your eyes open for more music by this killer group. "The Dragon and the Phoenix" by Shenanigan
Six people hoping the axiom 'do what you like, the money will follow' is more fact than fallacy... A great variety of Irish and Scottish traditional players and singers. A beautiful mystical song that vocally reminds me of a Celtic version of Joni Mitchell. But it also has a hobbit quality. Maybe it's just the whole dragon image, but I could seriously see this song in the sound track to JRR Tolkien's "The Hobbit". In any case, the song is certain to enchant you. So drop by and give it a listen. Hometown: Similar Artists: Website: ShenaniganDownload MP3: none available Buy CD: Mortal Daze
