A group of people in Melbourne, Australia, with an interest in Scottish fiddle music. The members range in age from 10 to 70. The club formed several years ago when its musical director, Judy Turner, returned to Melbourne from Boston. While she had been living in Boston she played with the Boston Scottish Fiddle Club and was keen to continue the experience. Since then the club has grown amazingly and now features a regular core of active members. So active, in fact, that they recorded their first CD in June 1999.
I had a tough time picking out which song to pick from this young group of Celtic fiddlers. The first song on their MP3.com website is a wonderful magical spoken rendition of the "Ballad of Tam Lin" with smooth fiddles backing the song speaker. But to compliment the next song, I decided one of their other popular tracks, "A Quartet of Fiddles".
"A Quartet of Fiddles" features two rousing reels ("Milton St", written by Judy Turner and "Tommy's Tarbukas", by Alasdair Fraser) played by members of the club plus guests. This song immediately got my feet tapping and me wanting to dance. What more need be said about a great reel?
