"Eddystone Light" by The Blarnacles

The Blarnacles are a band that focuses on Celtic and American Folk music. Performing both instrumentals and vocal selections, this band counts the likes of groups like the Clancy Brothers to The Chieftains as inspiration and influences. They find that by injecting humor into their performances and choosing the right kind of songs, they have found it easy to entertain their audience. Their songs range from covers of traditional Irish songs, Irish children's songs, rebel songs, drinking songs, and occasionally numbers by Bill Staines and other contemporary singer/songwriters.

"The Holy Grail of Irish Drinking Songs" by Brobdingnagian Bards

by Catherine L. Tully

Artist: Brobdingnagian Bards
Album: "The Holy Grail of Irish Drinking Songs"
Year produced: 2006

Here is a good question--how can you go wrong with an Irish drinking songs CD? The answer is that you can't--especially when it is the Brobdingnagian Bards, and the CD starts out with "Beer, Beer, Beer?" Irish songs can be done and re-done, but its the mood they are recorded in and the feel of the tune through the artist's interpretation is what makes all the difference in the world to the listener. The Brobdingnagian Bards couldn't have picked a grouping of songs that were better suited to their relaxed, jovial style and sound--and they nailed it with this collection. You'll hear some good ol' favorites through their voices and be tappin' your feet the whole time through.

"Seven Drunken Nights" is my personal favorite, because it sounds like it was recorded in the pub after a pint... or five... just plain great fun and good music--a romp! In fact, the Bards have topped all other efforts on this compilation--hitting their stride and really shining here. As always, the music is well-played and the arrangements manage to be traditional and unique, all at the same time.

Ending with "Health to the Company" at track 16 left me wanting to hear more, appealing to my Irish heart in the way that only this music can. The good news is--I am sure that there is more to come from these guys! My only regret is that I was drinking tea while listening! (I'll fix that and listen to them next time with a beer in hand...) Don't miss this great collection of songs!

"Scott Skinner's Compliments to Dr. McDonald" by Sassanak Lassies

"Sassanak" is the Scottish slang term for a 'Non-Scottish person.' Not surprising, the two ladies who make up the Sassanak Lassies who hail from Rochester, NY. "Raglan Road" by Finn's Fury

What would be the best way to describe the sound of Finn's Fury? It's Urban Celtic Fusion Rock. Made up of three members of New York's celtic band Gael Force, this group fuses blues, punk, as well as lyrical vocals into a hard rock wall of sound. Even more, this band has the great ability to improvise. The unpredictabilty and the raw edge to the instrumental jams are a trademark of this group.

All of the members come from a diverse collection of experience. From the Waldorf Astoria and Irish Festivals all over the country to Broadway and television, the group is made up of an exciting and eclectic mix of people that work well together and create high energy performances. It is the perfect combination and the prefect mix of both old and new. Definitely worth checking out.

"Farewell to Eirann" by Prydein

What started off as a band of five college friends known as Whisky Before Breakfast in 1995, turned into something else. But it wasn't without hardships. Whiskey Before Breakfast had dissolved by 1998. Two of the founding members, Aron and Iain, with their drive to continue to play, formed Prydein in 1999 with three new bandmates. What emerged was a new sound that was so different from their previous band that they decided to take it a step further. Prydein bridges the gap between celtic music and ska, rock, funk, hip hop as well as more traditional stylings but all with an amazingly high energy. Prydein brings forth their own brand of Bagpipe Kilt-Rock with dazzling harmonies and energetic settings to bring any festival to its feet.

"Isn't It Grand, Boys" by Irish Stout

Irish Stout is no longer just a dark beer made from roasting malts and barley. Now it is also a band--a couple friends who love drinking songs as much as they love drinking. We don't care about politics, religion, or being the most-traditional band in the world. Our sound is sharp, unique, and designed for hours of good old-fashioned song as you drink the night away.

So if you're looking for traditional "Celtic music", leave now. We're gonna show you the FUN, RAUCOUS side of Celtic music. The type of music that might get your toes tapping, your beer splashing, your hearts racing, your eyes laughing, your thoughts crafting, your body thrashing, and your voice cracking from too much singing. Yeah. We know what you want to hear. Because we want to hear it too!

So go ahead. Grab a pint of Irish Stout and join us in the pub. It doesn't have to be the same Irish pub. Yours will do. Just bring the CD out and give it to the bartender and say, I want music I can sing to! Then let the Irish Stout start flowing and satiate your thirst so that every day is St. Patrick's Day, thanks to Irish Stout.
